The "problem" for Belief is Truth; it really DOES matter whether the believed is true.
The "problem" for Truth is Belief; it really DOES matter whether the true thing is believed.
We inhabit the problematic. For the most part, our solutions fail when no one believes they can succeed, or they are in fact impossible solutions because they are based on a falsehood.
If I could be an apologist, I would be a presuppositionalist. The only "religious argument" that makes sense is that without a God we could not be questioning His Existence. As one breathing, can then question the existence of air. But of course, this conceit also falls in the face of evidence. Francis Schaefer's admission of the silence of God in railing against the existence of that silence.
ReplyDeleteAn "unshakable belief" may truly exist. But the reason it cannot be shaken up, is that it cannot be taken up in the first place.
ReplyDeleteBelief is not a thing, it is not a destination, it is not even remotely communicable. It is, however, a requirement. Nothing approaching consciousness can exist without it, without its shining octarine head emerging from the sea of imagination and hope and fear.
Truth is not a "Good" thing. It is not the opposite of "Evil". Truth is something to avoid--obviously, everyone hides it, when given the choice. Virtually everyone tip-toes around Truth as if it is distasteful. It stinks. You could find it in the dark. You stumble over it daily, but do not mention it to your neighbors. Everyone is naked but thinks they are wearing emporer's clothes.
